instructor.

in case you dunno me, I'm a thinker. Much to my zodiac, palmistry and blood type. haha.

So, for the past good years of being an instructor.
What makes a dance instructor?

I think a dance instructor is very 'powerful'. We have the power to make people dance. Move to the music. And have fun.
I feel that sometimes, others are taking this for granted.

We have moved away from,
"hi people, lets warm up."
"lets drill techniques"
"here's today choreo"
"good bye, c you next week."
Hopefully.

To a caring and understanding instructor, knowing the needs of our students. Trying to help them enjoy dance at the end of the day. They happy, we happy.

Although sometimes I find myself, like yesterday, being a poor instructor. I can't help my students to achieve a good national standard. Sigh.

Guess I seriously need to work harder. Not only for myself, but for the sake of the next generation of dancers.
I've already pondered, its not that we are lousy, just that our previous generation had been all grown up (*funk stylers), family, work or even a retired grandpa. Hence, no knowledge had been passed down. They stopped dancing.

But other countries have their previous generation that never stopped dancing since the 80s, and had been dancing for decades, thus passing valuable information to the new bloods. For this, we cannot stop dancing.

We should help to create Singapore dancers of tomorrow.

keep on dancing.

*funk stylers - dancers into funk styles, bboy, soul, lock, pop, wack, etc.

character.

why popping, locking and house?

Well, in the beginning there was popping, then led to locking then house.
(Altho the real beginning was mtv style and jazz...)

Dance styles to me, are like characters to humans. Each portraying a different side of us.
We don't stay happy, or sad forever. That's what I meant. Not split personalities... or maybe?

At times you wanna run around ecstatically, at times you wanna scream your lungs out, at times you wanna... be alone.

Something like that.

Each of them gives me a different mood. A whole new world when I'm dancing it.

When I pop, you are that smooth talking boogaloo walker.

When I lock, you are that charming, groovy, energetic bunny.

When I house, you are not really there. The world seems larger than life. Like staring back at earth from space.

Again, something like that. Not necessary like that all the time.
We have to take into consideration of the music we are moving to.
I can pop like I lock. I can lock like I house.

Music has no exact time line. Anyone found looking for it, is doomed to failure.
As music change indefinitely.
Thus dance, since 1) Music inspires dance.

I believe that there is a dance suited for everyone.
Just whether have you found it yet.

These 3 styles have taught me so much things about dance that I never knew.
And they are so part of me, and like air. Educates, and supplies.

I solely believe that everyone and anyone can dance, just whether you found the right one yet.

So what is your favorite style?

Better yet, why?

language.

I have always felt that dance is just another language.
You know the A's to Z's.
You know the words.

How are you going to speak it, is another thing. Slangs? Slurs?

That would become, your style of 'dance'.
"Hey, I recognise that voice, its HIM."

We all do speak English. 'How' is it spoken by us, that's the interesting part.

We can't speak in such a way no one would could comprehend. And we ain't going to speak like robots. So what are we suppose to 'speak' like?

beliefs.

1. Music inspires dance.
2. Dance is nothing but the freedom of expression.

3. The existence of a style does not exist, unless you know why it existed.
